Our History

Yeshiva Har Torah was founded in 1989 by a group of concerned parents and community leaders, spearheaded by our Dean, Rabbi Meir Bilitzky. The tone was set for YHT to become a unique yeshiva based upon an educational philosophy that sought to provide a child-centered program of instruction with the goal of meeting each student’s individual needs in a warm and caring atmosphere. Starting with a Kindergarten and 1st grade and fewer than twenty students, the fine reputation that YHT established began to attract students rapidly. In 1995, Rabbi Gary Menchel assumed the mantel of leadership. With his educational expertise, his gentle manner and his indefatigable spirit, Rabbi Menchel has continued to develop and enhance YHT, implementing sophisticated and progressive programs in all areas of study while continuing to demonstrate the school’s commitment to each individual child. In 2005, the yeshiva moved from two rented locations to a new state-of-the-art facility. As YHT continued to grow rapidly, the new facility was quickly outgrown and, in 2012 an additional floor was added. Today, with nearly 700 students, Yeshiva Har Torah is recognized as one of the premiere yeshivot in the New York metropolitan area.
